Well-known Oxford geneticist Sykes (The Seven Daughters of Eve), in this lively and thought-provoking book, gives a genetic twist to the battle between the sexes. All human existence, he says, stems from the battle between the X and Y chromosomes to further their own reproduction at the expense of the other. The Y chromosome is passed on only by fathers, while mitochondrial DNA is passed on only by mothers. Sykes shows that many members of several Scottish clans (most notably the Macdonalds) can be traced via their Y chromosomes back to a common ancestor. Researchers have also been able to trace the extent of Viking settlement and intermarriage in the British Isles and northern Europe through Y chromosome distribution. Sykes's argument for a genetic role in homosexuality will undoubtedly be controversial. Using Dean Hamer's pedigrees, he claims that evidence points less to a "gay gene" than to mitochondrial DNA playing the leading role in a Machiavellian plot to further its own reproduction. Sykes concludes by noting that, as evidenced by declining sperm counts and high percentages of abnormal sperm, among other variables, the Y chromosome is a genetic mess and is deteriorating so quickly that men could become extinct. Those who find that a happy thought will want to snap up this book, as well as readers interested in learning what our chromosomes tell us about where we came from and where we may be headed.

This book is extremely readable, and yet challenging. It made me look at leadership not as a mantle to wear, but rather as a process of becoming. The act of questioning - in reality of questing - for what you, your organization, your employees, and your customers want, need, and desire is laid out with specific things to ask, and how to answer them.

The author uses his own made up slang called "Nadsat" and it is difficult to grasp in the beginning, you may should find yourself having fun calling your own friends "droogs" or saying your girlfriend has really pretty "glazzies" (eyes). It only takes a very short while to grasp onto to this slang and this book only becomes more enthralling with understanding. Other than the slang, I had absolutely NO trouble whatsoever understanding what was being spoken or what was happening physically in the story. Its the Nadsat talk that will give you pains in the gulliver (head).

As soon as I got past the first chapter, I was immediately sucked into the mystery of the book. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's amazing. This is the kind of book that never gets boring. The mysteries are realistic, and Sue grafton gives you just the right information to keep you reading and then want more after you're done. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into mysteries or suspense. These are by far my favorite series of books.

Эту книгу должен прочесть каждый, кто хоть немного владеет английским, так как на русском она выйдет нескоро.
Я радостно скачал ее с Авакса и обнаружил, что она сканирована совершенно безобразно. Прочтя первые главы, я сразу понял, что ее надо сделать достоянием общественности в достойном для такого капитального сочинения виде. Рекомендую. Обязательно прочтите. Многое, что касается так называемой "войны с терроризмом" кажется мне достаточно спорным, зато большая часть книги посвящена технологическим прорывам в компьютерном мире - и это невероятно интересно. К примеру, автор красочно описывает, что сейчас делается в Японии в сфере мобильных телефонов и считает, что США отстает от нее лет на десять. Вот, сижу, считаю, сколько нам придется ждать...
